Criticism

Criticism cuts.
My soul bleeds.
My ego shrinks, before striking out; lest its fragile shell, lying in wait receives more than it can bear.
I consider every barb.
And weigh every thrust.
And regardless of merit, I cop another dent.
‘Tis not for the faint hearted: those that make a decision, express themselves, or live another day.
Yet every dawn delivers hope of kinder words.
A more understanding response.
Recognition of worth hovers, as elusive as the holy grail.
Don’t seek it - it is the call of the sirens.
Remember instead, we all have worth -
regardless of what others see.
And dare that ego to ignore rather than absorb:
the mindless, the ignorant, the daft,
the bile of the thoughtless,
and the thorns of the unweeded mouth or mind.
Another’s love can help lick the wounds,
but the greatest balm of all seeps in from within,
if only we put one foot in front of the other,
today and tomorrow. Again and again.
Living to fight another day, there’s nobility in that alone.
And infinitely more hope of happiness treading this path than the other.
So face up together. Feel the power each new day brings.
Live and deflect, ignore or absorb as we each see fit.
Adjust where needed. Power on where not. Live OUR life regardless.
